It goes back almost sixty years. The first automatic transmission developed
in-house by Mercedes-Benz was back in 1961.
As with most Mercedes innovations it took many years of intensive
development work into manufacturing the four-speed automatic clutch which
premiered in April 1961 as an optional extra for the 220 SEB model of the 111
series.
Mercedes-Benz had already produced vehicles with partially
automated gear shifting prior to this development. That goes back well over six decades
ago. Engineers were already at work on
the company’s first automatic transmission.
It was known as the “ Hydrak” hydraulic automatic clutch and was
presented in the summer of 1957.
Now, in the 2020 models and beyond Mercedes Benz continues
to make innovations in the manufacturing of its transmissions. To properly maintain or replace these newer
models (as well as the older ones) you need to trust the expertise of Denver
area Mercedes transmission specialists, The German Car Shoppe in Littleton. Call for service at (303) 798-2287.
