What is a Dual Clutch Transmission?

A dual-clutch transmission is an important approach to an automatic transmission.  Think of it as a manual transmission controlled by a computer, but instead of one clutch, it has two.  While one clutch controls the even gears, and the other controls the odd gears.  What’s the purpose?  Dual-clutch transmissions are designed to shift between gears faster and be more fuel-efficiently.

Historically speaking, when automakers first began developing automated manual transmissions for modern drivers, the systems had a single clutch.  These transmissions had individual gears for each ratio, just like a manual transmission.  The shifting process, though, was automated, as with a conventional automatic transmission.

Something to Know about your Diesel-Powered Vehicle.

It’s called the common-rail fuel injection system.  As it pertains to diesel engines, it features a high-pressure fuel rail which feeds the solenoid valves.  This is in opposition to the low-pressure pump feeding unit injectors.  Late model common rail diesels now feature piezoelectric injectors for greater precision.

High pressure injection delivers power and fuel consumption benefits over earlier lower pressure fuel injection, by injecting fuel as a larger number of smaller droplets, giving a much higher ratio of surface area to volume. This combines atmospheric oxygen with vaporized fuel delivering more complete combustion.

Sounds complicated…doesn’t it?  What is more intricate is keeping your finely tuned German vehicle on the road by having the tools and expertise to repair fuel injection systems.  Here at The German Car Shoppe in Littleton we have just what it takes to keep your car running smoothly on the roads around Denver.  Make an appointment today at (303) 798-2287.
